The Stigma behind it
The stigma behind depression comes from the belief that it's a sign of weakness rather than an actual mental illness/disorder. People living with this disorder often hear " Depression isn't real", "Depression is just an excuse for being lazy", "Have you ever considered being happy?", and ect... People that don't live with this disorder may not know the harm that they are causing by saying these things. Due to the fact that depression is very stigmatized many people hesitate to seek help, have low self-esteem issues and experience social isolation. Stigma could lead to discrimination towards people with depression, the type of discrimination they deal with is work place, socialization, and housing discrimination. People with this disorder are put in a stereotypical box by society but what people what people may not know is that not everyone living with this disorder display the symptoms because of the fear of being looked at differently, being stigmatized, and/or being discriminated against.
